Asian quake toll at least 20,000

A POWERFUL earthquake flattened entire villages of mud-brick homes, triggered landslides and toppled a 10-story apartment building Saturday, killing more than 18,000 people as it devastated a mountainous swath touching Pakistan, India and Afghanistan.

Mt. Everest comes up short
    MOUNT Qomolangma, also known as Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, stands 8,844.43 meters above sea level, some four meters shorter than previously thought.
